A vital component in maintaining your slate roof is regularly scheduled inspections that are performed by a professional firm such as McCreesh & Son. The roof inspection on this residence showed damage to the flashings around the window and the small gable roof over the porch.
Once the flashings have been breached, the damage begins and then expands until a small repair job can become a major overhaul. The same is true of one piece of slate perhaps broken during a storm. The break allows a small amount of water in initially … but the problem will continue to grow until the damaged slate is replaced. |

The appropriate material used to replace flashings is copper-based because copper provides the longest possible protection. It is not desirable to patch the flashings with tar; that is a band-aid that will not correct the problem of disintegrating metals. Right: note the new copper around window box. Also note the snow guards; these hold back a sufficient amount of snow buildup so that your gutters will not be overwhelmed. In wintery regions (such as Pennsylvania) these are a wise investment!
